On June 8th 2015, the DVLA abolishes the paper counterpart of the UK driving licence.

When you hire a vehicle after this date you may be asked to provide certain information from your driving record.

UK drivers can view their driving licence details online by logging on to www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence. A unique licence check code is generated to share details with a car hire company. This allows the companies to see your name, what vehicles you can drive, penalty points/disqualifications, and the last eight characters of your driving licence number.

There are 2 steps to this process – 1 for the driver and 1 for the hire company.

Step 1. This step is for you as the driver. You’ll need to log on to our View Driving Licence service on GOV.UK and click on ‘Share your licence’. This will generate a unique one-time use access code that you’ll need to share with the hire company, along with the last 8 digits of your driving licence number.

You’ll also have the option to download a summary of your driving licence information and access code and send it to the hire company.

Step 2. This step is for the hire company. Once you give them the access code it can be used with the last 8 digits of your driving licence number to view appropriate information from your DVLA driving record.

Drivers with old style paper driving licences issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998 can also use the Share Driving Licence service.
